Enable them to discuss what we can do for it using the information in the text or they learned in some other ways. Teaching important points Help the students know something about the history, the development and the present conditions of the Olympic Games, and also the preparations the Chinese people made for the xx Olympic Games by the text learning. Today we’ll read a new passage—The Olympic Games and discuss something about the Olympic Games further. Step II Lead-in 1. Listen to a record about Samaranch’s speech at the opening of the 1996 Olympic Games. 2. Ask the students to guess who is giving a speech according to what they heard from the tape. 3. Show the picture of “Samaranch” on the screen and check the answer. 4. Talk about the petition for hosting the 29th Olympic Games and learn the importance of hosting it. T: I’m sure most Chinese people will never forget that day. Who can tell me what the date was? S: July 13th, xx. T: Quite right! Let’s keep that day in our minds forever. It’s a great honor to China.Hearing the news, many Chinese people couldn’t help crying. They took part in many activities to celebrate it.The Olympic Games are very important to us, why? S: It will make the world know our country well.It can also show the world how strong our country is and how much the people of China love sports. The most important of all, it’s good for developing the economy of our country. T: Very good! That’s why so many countries are peting for hosting the Olympic Games. As we all know, the xx Olympic Games are drawing near, it’s necessary for us to know more about the Olympic Games. Here are some facts about the Olympic Games on the screen. Step Ⅲ Brief Introduction to Some Facts about the Olympic Games 1. Show the Olympic Flag on the screen T: What can you see on the screen? S: The five Olympic rings. T: What do they stand for? S: Five continents. T: On the screen we can see each ring has different color and stands for different continent. Now let’s look at them one by one. The blue ring stands for Europe. How about the other rings? S: The black ring stands for Africa; the red one stands for America. The yellow—Asia and the green --- Oceania. T: Well-done! We can also find out that the five rings are interlocking. What does it stand for? S: It stands for friendship of five continents. T: Good! The Olympic Flag is the symbol of the Olympic Games. After each Olympic Games, It is always passed on to another new hosting city. 2. Show the Olympic Motto on the screen T: The Olympic Motto is also important in the Olympic Games. It’s well-known to us. What’s the Olympic Motto? S: Faster, Higher, Stronger! T: What does it mean? S: It means every athlete should try to run faster, jump higher and throw further. T: Yes! Every four years, the Olympic Games are held in different countries. Do you know where the Olympic Games came from? How much do you know about the history of the Olympic Games. Let’s e back to the first Olympic Games. 3. Show the scene of the first Olympic Games T: Here is the scene of the first Olympic Games. Now I have a question to ask you. When did the first Olympic Games begin? S: Around 776 BC. T: Where? S: In Greece. T: Exactly it was held at city Olympia in ancient Greece. It had a strong religions associations and honored the Greek Gods. It was a national event. Only the men in Greece peted. There were no medals. Winners were crowned with wreaths of Olive trees and became national heroes.Can you see some people on the screen? S: Yes. T: What are they doing? S: Perhaps they are collecting the fire to light the Olympic torch. T: You’re right. The Olympic torch here is very important. It’s the source of the flame. Before the opening of each Olympic Games, the torch was brought by a relay of athletes from here. It will keep burning until the end of the Games. Can you see a man running? S: Yes. T: In the first Olympic Games there were not many events. Running is the major event. Slowly people added more events. The Olympic Games have a very long history.
