How to grasp the main idea of a paragraph. 2. How to help the Ss master the use of some useful words and expressions. 3. How to enable the Ss to use the sentence patterns correctly. Lead-in and Pre-reading T: OK. We saw many beautiful sites yesterday, which have famous cultural relics. So, what do you think of those sites? Do you think them great? If so, sites? Do you think them great? If so, what make them great in your opinion? Now let’s have a discussion. Discuss the following questions on the screen with your partner. (Teacher shows the following on the screen.) 1. Some cities, like Paris and Beijing, are called great cities of the world. In your opinion, what makes a city great? 2. What are your favourite cities? Why? 3. What cultural relics are there in the place where you live? How important are they? T: I’ll give you five minutes to do it. After that, I’ll ask some students to say their answers. S4: A great city is usually the capital of a country and has a large population, like Paris and Beijing, there are many cultural sites, such as the Imperial Palace, the Summer Palace, the Heaven Temple, the Forbidden City. So it is great. Paris is the economic and political centre of France. It is famous for the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. In a word, a long history and famous cultural relics can make a city great. S5: … T: Yes, all of your ideas are worth praising. And all of the things you mentioned can make a city great. And what’s your favourite cities? S6: I like Beijing best, because it is the capital city of China. S7: I think my favourite city is Chengdu, the place where I was born and grew up. I love its weather, people and food. S8: I like Shanghai, because it’s so modern and beautiful. S9: I like Kunming, “the Spring City”, because it is beautiful with flowers and green trees all year round and the weather there is very nice-it’s not too hot and not too cold. T: OK. Very good. What about the third one? S10: There are Mount Laoding and Shangdang men in the place where I live. T: How important are they? S10: Because you can see the big bronze statue of Emperor Yan on Mount Laoding from far away. It’s about 40 metres high. It’s really attractive. And Shangdang men can remind you of the famous battle there. T: Very good. FStep Ⅲ.Reading (Teacher deals with the new words with the whole class) T: Today we’re going to read a passage. It is especially concerned with the great people who make a city great. The great city here is St. Petersburg in Russia, which is regarded as a great city of heroes. Why is it so called? Let’s open the books and read the text quickly. Try to find the answers to the two questions on the screen. (Teacher shows the following on the screen.) 1.
