Phones Making us Lazy Do smartphones really make people smart? It seems like they do.As The Washington Post noted,we can turn to the device to“quickly access facts both essential and trivial (琐碎的)”—the fastest way to a nearby cinema, how many centimetres equal an inch,or the name of the actor who starred in a TV series, etc. With a smartphone,we don't need to keep those pieces of information in our heads. However, new research suggests our devices are more than conveniences,as they are making us lazy thinkers. This research es from The brain in your pocket:Evidence that Smartphones are used to supplant (取代) thinking, which was published recently in the journal puters in Human Behaviour. Leading experts Nathaniel Barr and Gordon Pennycook of the psychology department at the University of Waterloo in Ontario,Canada believe that people who are more “intuitive (直觉的)” thinkers than “analytical” thinkers—meaning, they're more likely to rely on natural feelings to make decisions than to really analyze a problem and figure out a logical solution—also rely more on their phones than their own brainpower.“Smartphones allow them to be even lazier than they would otherwise be,” mented Science Daily. What's the difference between intuitive and analytical thinking? According to The Washington Post, the researchers used this problem in the study: A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost? An intuitive response is that the ball must cost 10 cents. It is wrong—10 cents plus $1.10 equals $1.20,not $1.10.Only through analytic thinking can one get the correct response: The ball costs 5 cents. It's just this analytical thinking that smartphone users seem to avoid. In three studies involving 660 participants, the researchers examined different thinking styles. Then they looked at the participants' smartphone habits. “Participants in the study who demonstrated stronger analytical skills and a greater willingness to think spent less time using their smartphones' search-engine function,”reported Science Daily. “It is important to think without our gadgets (小器具),” Pennycook told The Washington Post.“There might be a lot of benefits of using our smartphones, but we still have to think in analytical ways to make sure we are correct.” 1.What's the main idea of the first two paragraphs? A.How to get to the nearest cinema? B.Who starred in a TV series? C.How to use smartphones? D.The convenience of smartphones. 根据第二段中的“the fastest way to a nearby cinema, how many centimetres equal an inch,or the name of the actor who starred in a TV series, etc.” D 2.The underlined word “ access” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “________”. A.accept B.obtain C.pare D.remember B 3.Which adjective best describes Gordon Pennycook's attitude towards smartphones? A.Critical. B.Cautious. C.Optimistic. D.Disappointed. B B Hello, this is your captain speaking. Okay, I lied. I don't sit in the cockpit (驾驶舱). I sit where you sit. And I fly a lot. So I would like to suggest ways we may meet when we are on the plane. Here are a few gentle suggestions: First, when you finally sit down, think before you push your seat back into the person behind you. Breaking kneecaps (膝盖骨) is for violent movies. Feet. As in bare feet. Don't do it. Maybe at home you like to take off your socks and plant your toes wherever you like, but not on a plane, okay? I recently sat next to a woman who stuck her bare feet on the cabin wall! Please.Unless you're Spider-Man and about to walk upside down, keep the shoes on, all right? Kids. Let's talk about kids. Kids love airplanes. Many can't believe they have a seat in front of them; they can kick all flight long, while mom and dad watch the movie.Please. Tell them to stop. And if you've got a crying baby at least pretend you're trying to keep him quiet. Don't hide behind a US Weekly. Also, once your kids stop crying, the plane should not hear from them again until they are old enough to be—and actually are—the pilots. I recently had a little boy behind me who all flight long kept singing, at the top of his lungs,“Go-Go-Go...the cat in the hat!”I don't know this song, but I do know his mom did nothing to stop him. So there you go. With a little cooperation, we can all have a better year as passengers. Thank you for your attention. And now, as the captain says, sit back and relax. 4.Who is the author most probably? A.A captain. B.A pilot. C.An airline employee. D.An airline passenger. I don't sit in the cockpit. I sit where you sit.”和最后一段的“we can all have a better year as passengers”可知,作者是一名普通的飞机乘客。 答案:D 5.The author thinks the woman who put her bare feet on the cabin wall ________. A.disgusting B.dirty C.cold D.boring A 6.According to the text, the author seems to ________. A.dislike badly-behaved kids B.oppose kids' travelling by air C.hope parents try to control their babies D.think some parents shouldn't read newspapers C 7.What would be the best title for the text? A.Say no to violence B.Mind your own business C.Making the flight a bit friendlier D.Safety tips about travelling by air 根据最后一段的“With a little cooperation,we can all have a better year as passengers.” C C On a cool summer night in Wyoming,Dean Biggins waits patiently in his truck.Suddenly, Biggins, a wildlife biologist, spots a pair
