Teaching Aids: a puter, a recorder Teaching Procedures: Warm up: (T) Did you sleep well last night? (S) Yes/No! (T) Why not? Don’t you like to sleep in your dormitory? Then could you tell us what kind of houses you want to live in? That means, what are your dream houses? I know you have so many ideas. Now let’s visit some other dream houses first. Step 1: Show some dream houses that designed by some designers: Bond Mansion, Country Retreat, Ice Castle, Poseidon's Throne Resort and Spa, Quit Smoking Towers, River view water dome, Saint Basils Tower, Sand Castle In The Sky, Space Castle, Tree House, Cottage in the sky When you are visiting these special houses, can you tell their materials, shapes or locations? Step 2: Listen to the tape and read the text quickly. Which of the following things did the girl’s dream house have? A swimming pool A big garden (yard) with trees A balcony Running water A games room Three bathrooms (washrooms) ‘real’ stairs A cellar (basement) Step 3: Read the text again carefully and find out the topic of each paragraph. Para. 4 Dream house And my parents always told us their dream houses which would be ours. It would have running water and pipes that worked. It would have real stairs and at least three washrooms. It would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. Para. 5 The house on Mango Street But the house now isn’t the house we wanted. It is small and red with tight steps in front and small windows. There is a small garage and a small yard. There are ordinary stairs in the house, only one washroom and a bedroom. Step 4: Answer the questions about the text. 1. How many places has the girl lived in? A lot./ She can’t remember. 2. Where did she live before Mango Street? Why did they leave? A third floor flat on Loomis. Because the water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn’t fix them. 3. Why did the girl want at least three bathrooms? So that, when she took a bath, she wouldn’t have to tell everybody. 4. Who did Mama and Papa talk to about their dream house? To their children. 5. What do you think was the biggest problem with the house in Mango Street? Windows, bricks, stairs… Step 5: Work in groups. Discuss what your dream house would be like. Use the Key Words and the pictures to help you. e.g. I would like to live in my house near to the sea because I can hear the voice of the sea… Kinds of houses: cottage, flat, detached house, semi-detached house, mansion, wood cabin Kinds of rooms: bathroom, bedroom, dining room, sitting room, hall, games room, cellar, attic Notes on the blackboard: Dormitary (宿舍), material (材料), location (位置), characteristic (特征) Summary and Homework: •Review the text. •Write your dream house, using the key words to help you Postscript: (1) The students are interested in the topic.
